Copywriting Tips
Saturday, June 19th, 2010If you are going to do your copywriting in house, there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you begin writing content for your online business. These things include maintaining interest, using proper keywords, meeting search engine guidelines, and having plenty of white space.
An interesting site is a site people will go to. Interesting goes hand in hand with useful. When you write content for your website, be sure the information is interesting and useful for the readers. Don’t tell people things they already know. Give facts that are interesting and unique. Maintaining the attention of shoppers on the web is very difficult for many businesses. The content should be relevant and information the users want to read about. Ways you can go wrong include not including content on products you are trying to sell. Let’s say you are selling t-shirts and you don’t provide size information or the material the shirts are made from. People want to know this information. Provide information people want to know. Another example would be a USCIS website offering the US citizenship exam. Most people who go to a site like this want information about the process and even instructions on how to fill out the US immigration forms. Provide useful and helpful information.
Keywords need to be a part of content. You must research the right keywords that will be beneficial for your site. You want to use the words in your content that are typed into the search engines most commonly by the users when they are looking for the same products and services that you offer. Don’t pay for keywords. This is a waste of money. Just do a search and properly optimize your site using the appropriate words. If your site doesn’t have a lot of traffic to it, this may be because you are using the wrong keywords. Always research first the right words and don’t assume based on what you think people are typing in. Some of the different combinations will surprise you.
Search engines have guidelines you must follow when writing content, posting pictures, and doing other things with a website. Content must follow these guidelines as well. You cannot misuse keywords on a site. If you misuse words and put them in the code or type them over and over for a good listing, you will be blacklisted. This means the search engine will remove your website from their directory list and it will never pull up at all when users are searching, even for your exact name of business or URL.
White space is another factor many people don’t think about with a website. When you design a site and use content, don’t talk too much. People don’t go online so they can read a book. If you have documentation, provide it for download, not on main pages of your site. People want to surf the web and read on their own time. White space is beneficial because it makes a site look nice, neat, and professional.
